FRENZ activities in 2010
With February already upon us, and as we move in to the second year of the current FRENZ project, we would like to take a moment to highlight some of our activities and events set for 2010.
Website
The FRENZ website is currently under renovation in order that it should become more user friendly, and offer some additional features, such as the social networking tools Twitter and Facebook, to allow quicker access to a wider audience and discussion fora.
Our website now has direct links to both Twitter and Facebook on the homepage, or you can visit them here:

Helpdesk
Queries to the FRENZ helpdesk have become more sophisticated over the last 12 months as researchers become more familiar with FP7. Generally, the heaviest use of the helpdesk service comes around the deadlines for IRSES (International Research Staff Exchange Scheme) and the Marie Curie Fellowships, in March and August respectively.
Researchers are reminded that, time permitting, the FRENZ Director will read and comment on proposals.
Training and Visits
Almost all Universities and CRIs were visited by FRENZ in 2009. Visits – at least one in each year - are arranged through each organisation’s Research Office, and aim to meet the specific needs of that institution. Researchers should contact their research manager with areas of interest.
The organisational visits complement the training programme offered by FRENZ in Rotorua. The 2010 programme, launched in late 2009, currently has 6 key modules covering the main areas of interest in FP7, with information specifically targeted toward either researchers or research management. The next event will be the IRSES proposal writing course, to be held on 25 February. Places are limited, and those interested should register via the FRENZ website.
A full list of training events is available here.
Where sufficient demand is illustrated, FRENZ can also deliver these courses at other locations, such as the recent FP7 for Research Managers course, held in Wellington for members of the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS). Discussions are underway to offer another session in Christchurch.
Diaspora
The Survey of European researchers in NZ has been underway for 3 months now, and whilst responses have been excellent, we would love to hear from anyone who is European, but currently working in Research in NZ.
You can complete the survey here.
A complementary survey of NZ researchers in Europe will take place in the current months. If you know of NZ researchers currently working in Europe who might be interested in participating in this survey, please encourage them to register their details at the FRENZ website.
Staffing
FRENZ would also like to welcome Michelle McLeod to the team. As administrative assistant, Michelle will arrange organisational visits, and follow up on training events. This will free some of Carole Glynn’s time to participate in the PACE-net project, offering FP7 training to researchers in the Pacific, and allowing stronger NZ-Pacific linkages to be forged through FP7.
We anticipate to another busy year, and look forward to working with you to develop your European collaborations using FP7 in 2010.
ICT call results
The European Commission has advised the National Contact Points (NCPs) across Europe of the outcomes of the following Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) calls:
- FP7-ICT call 5
- FP7 ICT Call "ICT for Green Cars"-2010
- Cross-Thematic Call "Energy-efficient Buildings "
- Cross-Thematic Call "Factories of the Future"
Whilst the lists are not yet publicly available, researchers involved with any of these calls should contact their European coordinator to request preliminary information on the results of their projects.
