Horizon 2020 Programme Announcement

We are pleased to infom you that Mrs. Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research and Innovation, has announced on 21 June 2011 the new name for the future EU funding programme for research and innovation: "Horizon 2020 - the Framework Programme for Research and Innovation". This new Framework Programme will enter into force on 1st January 2014, after the end of FP7 on 31 Dec 2013.

"Horizon 2020 - the Framework Programme for Research and Innovation" is not just a new name for the same Framework Programme. It is the name for the new, integrated funding system that will cover all research and innovation funding currently provided through the Framework Programme for Research and Technical Development, the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). These different types of funding will be brought together in a coherent and flexible manner. Research and innovation funding will focus clearly on addressing global challenges. Needless red tape will be cut out and access to programs and participation will be made easier and simpler.

More details can be found in the press release as well as the website of the European Commission here.

Towards a global initiative on gene -environment interactions in diabetes/obesity in specific populations.

Brussels, 9-10 February 2012 European Commission, Charlemagne Building, Rue de la Loi 170, Brussels

Diabetes is a ticking time bomb that causes severe health complications and is the fifth leading cause of death world-wide. The number of persons suffering from the "type 2" form of this disease is set to rise to some 900 million globally by 2030, with devastating health and economic implications. To counter this sinister scenario, increasing attention is given to research into the environmental and genetic risk factors for diabetes and obesity in specific populations.

Key to FP7 Success

A recent survey, by the Ideal-ist National Contact Point network in the Infromation and Communiation Technologies theme, on 'what coordinators look for in a partner', has indicated that:

- 50% of coordinators surveyed partner with previous partners
- 27% of coordinators surveyed partner with contacts of previous partners

This suggests that networking and relationship building are key to FP7 success.

FRENZ aims to support researchers in developing the right contacts to engage with the Framework Programme, and can assist in identifying coordinators/ of existing FP7 projects.
